On Facebook, I sometimes see people saying that safety barriers are unnecessary, spoil the view, and are just an inconvenience to be bypassed. A case in point is the new barrier at Kanangra Walls.

BMG 5 July,1989
On Thursday 29 June 1989, Peter Serras, 25, of Flemington, was hauled to safety after he slipped 10 metres over the edge of a bank near the Valley of the Waters at Wentworth Falls.  Peter was walking near Empress Falls at about 4 pm, when he climbed through a safety fence for a better view and slipped. In the fall he fractured his right wrist and elbow. Unable to climb back up he shouted for help and was heard by two other bushwalkers. One of them climbed out of the valley to raise the alarm while her companion stayed with the man.

Police and paramedics reached the injured man and abseiled down to him where his condition was stabilised. Twenty-five bushfire brigade personnel were called and assisted in hauling the man up the bank, then to the top. He was then taken by ambulance to Katoomba Hospital where he was treated for his injuries. The Police Rescue Squad consisted of Sgt. P. Tunchon, Snr Const. G. Thornton and Const, M. Cavanagh.
