When you’re climbing that hill, it sometimes seems like you would like a ride out of the valley. When I last walked the Six Foot Track, I was wearing new boots, and the blisters were so bad the toenail on my left big toe came off, but I didn’t know how bad it was until I took my boots off at the end of the walk. The Gazette of 11 July 1990 says that two youths were airlifted the previous week by a special ambulance helicopter after one of them had become unable to walk any further because of blistered and sore feet.
They were part of a party of four youths who were on the third day of a walk along the Coxs River. After making camp for the night the afflicted youth was still unable to walk the following day. Two youths then walked out and raised the alarm. However, rescue attempts by the Polair and Careflight helicopters were frustrated by high winds. A twin engine ambulance helicopter from Wollongong had to be brought in to lift the two youths out of the bush. Can you imagine how bad those blisters must have been to call in a helicopter!!!!
