The Gazette 3 July 1991 says that Jim Smith reported a total of 114 bushwalkers were rescued in the “recent long weekend” presumably the period 29 June – 1 July 1991.  Unfortunately, there are no further details, but there must have been some groups involved and at the time, Jim was pointing out the necessity for people who lead group walks to attend a training course like that offered at the TAFE College.  I think that up until that time the largest number of people rescued in one incident was 34, that is, 30 primary school children and four teachers lost near Glenbrook earlier that year. This is why I don’t think it is excessive to claim a total of 400 people for the whole of the last year from 188 incidents.
